Be sure to grab the Jelly Roll Rug Pattern by RJ Designs or pick up one of my Pet Bowl Mat Patterns. Or any other designer pattern for making a Jelly Roll Rug or Mat.
One of the most important Tools you will need is a Sewing Machine that is capable of creating a Straight Stitch and Zigzag Stitch. If you like the pizzazz of the Serpentine Stitch then make sure that is an option on your machine.
You'll need to change out your Sewing Machine Needle. It's best to use a Microtex 80/12 or 90/14 Needle (this is a.k.a Topstitch or Purple Top Needle) or a Jean/Denim 100/16 Needle (a.k.a Blue Top Needle)
A Precut Jelly Roll is perfect for making a Jelly Roll Rug. There are usually 40-42 fabric strips in a variety of colors and patterns. Each strip is usually 2.50" wide x 44"-45" long. This will complete a Jelly Roll Rug that is approximately 28" x 43". Another option is to cut your own strips from your fabric stash.
A Precut Batting Roll will make it much easier when creating a Jelly Roll Rug. The batting rolls are 100% Cotton and are either 2.25" wide or 2.50" wide. The batting rolls come in 25yds or 50yds. For a Jelly Roll Rug with 40-42 strips you will need a total of 50 yards. If you want to save money then cutting your own batting strips is the way to go.
You will need to choose thread for your Jelly Roll Rug. 40wt or 50wt Cotton Thread or Poly-Core Thread works wonderful on a Jelly Roll Rug. Make sure to have at least 1100 - 1400 yards on hand as these rugs use a lot of thread. Choose from solid color or a variegated or stick with white or cream. It's your rug, make it special to you!
To keep the rug making process going, make sure to have 6-7 prefilled bobbins in the thread you are using for your Jelly Roll Rug. This way you just swap it out and keep sewing.
A great pair of sharp Scissors is a must have when creating a Jelly Roll Rug. My favorite scissors are these Blue Perfect Scissors by Karen Kay Buckley. These are 6" Medium Micro-serrated Non-slip Blade scissors. Great for all kinds of sewing projects.
Straight Sewing Pins will be needed for making your Jelly Roll Rug. They will be very helpful when turning the Fabric Tube into the Rug and especially around the corners.
An Iron and Spray Starch will be needed when sewing your strips together and when sewing the Fabric Tube together to create your Jelly Roll Rug. I personally like using my Oliso Iron and Mary Ellen's Best Press Spray Starch.
A level sewing surface is an absolute must! If your sewing machine doesn't sit down into a sewing table, then you will need to build up the surface around your sewing machine to have a level sewing area. Try using boxes, books, or other items to help achieve a flat sewing surface.
If available, it's best to swap out your regular presser foot for a Walking Foot or Accu-Feed attachment. This will help move the fabric on top while the dog feeds move the fabric on the bottom. This attachment is very helpful but not necessary.
You will be very happy that you have this tool when it comes to making the Fabric Tube for your Jelly Roll Rug. There are 3 Fabric Tube Maker Tools available in my store. Just choose your favorite!
A Magnetic Seam Guide is like have a couple extra fingers when sewing your Jelly Roll Rug. This nifty little gadget will help keep your Fabric Tube straight when sewing it together.
It's best to keep a Seam Ripper close by when making your Jelly Roll Rug. Sometimes you need to rip out some stitching when sewing the Fabric Tubes together if it looks like the rug is getting a ripple or wave in it. Best to take care of it before completing the rug.
Having a Sewing Awl available will help when making your Jelly Roll Rug. Get into those tight spaces with a Sewing Awl or Stiletto. Perfect for all sorts of sewing situations.
Quilting Clips will come in handy when you need to hold something together just before sewing. Having a handful of these 1" long Quilting Clips will be very helpful during your Jelly Roll Rug making process.
A Cardboard or Plastic Tube is great for rolling the sewn strips onto it for easier handling. Keep a cardboard tube from the Precut Batting Roll to use when your ready to roll up the sewn fabric strips.
Use a Basket & Dowel system to place your Sewn Strips & Precut Batting Roll on for easier access to each during the making of the Fabric Tube.
If you have the Basket Setup then use a longer cardboard tube or plastic tube to wrap the Fabric Tube on and then slide onto the dowel in the basket. Or, you can use an Electric Cord Reel and wrap the Fabric Tube on this reel for easier handling when making the Jelly Roll Rug.
